Slow Homecoming

2022 City Art Gallery, Silistra, BG
“Slow Homecoming” takes its name from a novel by Peter Handke. Given the eclectic nature, one can assume that this exhibition is a collection of hesitations: yes, probably starting with “how” and leaning toward “what to paint, and what is worth to be drawn”. Since it‘s a somewhat solitary way of work, painting and drawing inevitably mean thinking about meditation practices and methods of acquiring knowledge. Once, at the threshold of the existence of Islam, during the late 7th century in the Christian calendar, a certain kind of travelling in the Arab world called “rihla” gained popularity. Rihla was a method of cultivating and documenting knowledge while collecting and comparing traditions. It‘s also interesting to notice how “rihla” abandoned the passive contemplation of the Byzantine mystics living on their pillars for decades by taking a more active approach, maybe even trying to flee from the religious establishment‘s dogmas. Compared to our times, those approaches seem almost prosaic, but are they? Today, the discourse about the almighty, procreative male artist who conceives his pictorial universe in a messy workshop is gone. There are no mythical boundaries to be conquered and no benchmarks to be achieved. Happily, other topographies, entities and states of mind comprising a world beyond the familiar perspective are coming to the surface.
The protagonist from Handke‘s novel wanders through nameless geographies to find his comfort space only when in motion. So who knows, probably nowadays painting and drawing on their own are ways of travelling inwards, to a home destined to be forever on the move.
